Nagroda przyznawana jest corocznie pisarkom z całego świata, które publikują w Wielkiej Brytanii i piszą po angielsku. Zwyciężczyni otrzymuje czek na kwotę 30 000 funtów oraz limitowaną edycję dzieła sztuki znanego jako „Charlotte”, oba ufundowane przez Charlotte Aitken Trust.
